Becky Raisman Q&A: Goddess energy, staying positive, and seeing the light in her latest EP

By Edwin Fairbrother

Songwriter SPOTLIGHT Q&A: Becky Raisman

Becky Raisman has taken influences from popular TV shows, and a passion for the divine feminine to craft her latest EP Earth Goddesses. Providing pop music to stay positive too, Becky unpacks “seeing the light” and what’s behind this EP below.

How did you begin your journey as an artist? What led to the creation of your first EP?

My first EP was This Is My Moment. My first 3 EPs are currently going through a digital distribution change. I wrote some of the songs during Covid. I was watching the TV show Songland and that show inspired me to write A Song That Plays In My Heart and A Moment With You.

What themes and concepts does your latest EP Earth Goddesses explore? And what message did you want it to share?

“Earth Goddesses EP is about being a Goddess, living it up and being together seeing the light – meaning everything will be ok, stay positive.”

The last song Shining Through My Window was inspired from watching reruns of Degrassi: The Next Generation – this one episode where Craig sings his original song, a light bulb went off in my head, and I wrote the song.

What are the main challenges of being an independent artist in the US? And how do you overcome these?

I would have to say funding, getting gigs and getting your name out there. I just hustle, use word of mouth, and reach out to people. I use Musosoup and Music Submit, and I love it. From this I got exposure in music blogs and radio play.

Who have been your primary musical influences?

Too many to list but I hope to one day collaborate and open for Chappell Roan. If anyone reading this has a connection, have her team reach out please.

I’m also strongly inspired by Melissa Etheridge, Lady Gaga, Hayley Kioko, Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift. I’ve also been listening to this LGBTQ band the Crane Wives.

What’s the meaning behind the title of your latest EP ‘Earth Goddesses’? And what inspired you to create this EP?

It’s about being a goddess. I was listening to Nedra Johnston, taking a songwriting class and watching re-runs of Degrassi all inspired me to create this EP.

“To me, a goddess relates to a female deity or divine spirit, widely worshipped across cultures and history as a personification of the divine feminine. This is powerful.”

What’s ‘Shining Through My Window’ all about?

Shining Through My Window is about seeing the light and positive energy.

What’s the best thing about being an independent artist today?

Being an independent artist means I can release songs when I want, whatever songs I want to release, and I can write any song I want, and collaborate with any songwriter or producer.

What do you have planned for this year?

I start my 6th EP Pride Fest real soon, and I’m planning on releasing it sometime in November.
