Relatively new Icelandic singer-songwriter Brynja Rán is demonstrating her full potential with her new EP Seven, with the opening track and last single for the genre-fluid EP having just dropped – None Of You is a hard-hitting ballad with jazzy Winehouse undertones and powerful Adele top lines.
'Seven' EP Cover
Brynja is a singer-songwriter from the scenic north of Iceland that’s relatively new to the scene – having just one slow and smooth single Reckless released back in 2021. But now she’s displaying her full musical potential with powerful and well-layered EP Seven.
The first track on this EP and the last single to drop, None Of You, is a strong opener that brings layers of instrumental talent along with an exceptional vocal performance from Brynja.
She starts the song singing of a deep delusional love, and likely a passionate relationship – this is coupled with a rhythmic kick drum pounding away in the background that adds an element of rigidity and power from the very beginning.
After a few seconds many layers of expertly arranged instrumentation come in: from pianos to strings, even with a brass section gradually gearing up before the chorus – which brings the track together as a well-rounded soul/jazz number.
None Of You also shows Brynja’s eclectic make-up, with Winehouse-esque jazz ballads, powerful Adele-esque top-line choruses, and an arrangement that displays expert production. It’s no wonder that Brynja credits Amy and Adele as influences to her genre-fluid sound, and speaks of being lucky “to have such a great relationship with [her] producer.”
This song is an excellent eclectic contribution to the EP as a whole, and a slightly edgy jazz ballad that manages to retain a straightforward pop sound that so eloquently invites us into Brynja’s world of love, heartbreak and reflection…told by her musical storytelling and reinforced by her years of classical training.
