Duppy’s new self-produced single brings gut-wrenching subs and relentless bars back home to grime

Single Review: Woosh by Duppy

For people who like…grime, UKG, bass.

While firmly putting his own striking stamp on things, Duppy’s distinct grime music perfectly embodies the essence of the genre – and with its rigid bass and faster than fast-paced bars, the suitably titled Woosh is no different.

If you ask artists like Duppy if grime is dead, he’s just gonna laugh as his dizzying lyricism hits you in the face faster than Mike Tyson’s right-hook. If you’ve not heard of Duppy or his music, and especially if you’re over the age of 40, buckle up because he doesn’t abide by speed limits in any sense of the word.

This flourishing grime MC, producer and head of his own aptly named imprint Wooshu Recordings shows us the very reason he comes up with such whooshy titles, with his speedy new single.

Following his snappy last single Who Is This? which was less than two minutes long, Woosh encapsulates Duppy’s quick drawing style while also showcasing his ability to produce hard-hitting grime beats.

Jerky synths begin before a percussive grime drum beat, then it doesn’t take long for the drop to arrive – within 30 seconds Duppy’s irate bars accompany what I can only describe as a classic grime bass line that fills me with nostalgia.

It’s a heavy and hasty example of grime’s place within UK urban music, a defiant reminder that this is a genre that is far from dead and not going anywhere.

Duppy delivers lyrics so fast even most Gen Zs would struggle to keep up, and being a mid-thirties millennial myself, Woosh both reminds me of grime’s heydays some 20 years ago, as well as being a raw illustration of a young artist bringing startling ferocity to the modern-day scene.

With his new single released on March 30th 2025, Duppy takes the obscure style of artists like Ghetts, speeds it up for a fast-paced era, and moulds it into the rough uncompromising voice for grime’s youth of today.
