Lydia Kitto and J Loyd combine as Loaded Honey to deliver an exceptional summer soul masterpiece Tokyo Rain – as part of their full album Love Made Trees. This single is a beautifully gentle reminder of 70s soul’s impact on contemporary music, as well as their combined talent.
With Loaded Honey consisting of two key members from soul-funk powerhouse Jungle, it’s no wonder I was almost instantly transported back to summery 70s soul vibes listening to Tokyo Rain – it exudes everything good about summer time…brightness, warmth, and calm.
Lydia Kitto and J Loyd came together outside of Jungle to form Loaded Honey, which could be considered somewhat of an offshoot emerging from their creative partnership on Jungle’s last two albums, combined with their production workings outside of that project.
After being mesmerised by Lydia’s vocals, studied more closely Tokyo Rain actually brings so many layers of eloquent instrumentation to enjoy – melancholic verses brimming with bubbling bass lines and pretty piano notes tingling in the background, to beautifully harmonic choruses full of sublime violins and some kind of brass instrument hooting away.
All the layers seem to come together so effortlessly, the gentle vocals with a solid rhythm section and striking top-lines of violin and brass, meaning the combined talents of these two really are a match made in heaven.
This really does have it all going on, made for those muggy garden cocktail parties and summer BBQs. If you’re into tranquil soul Tokyo Rain more than hits the spot, and acts as a perfect gateway to the likely irresistible full album Love Made Trees. Check it out below!
