Single Review: Seasons by Mychelle ft Protoje

For people who like…soul, reggae, tranquil

Rising Hackney singer-songwriter Mychelle has just released a new version of her radiant April single with one hell of a surprise – an unexpected verse from reggae icon Protoje! With their vocals going together like ice cream and sunshine, now Seasons draws us in yet again with its swaying sounds and frankly beautiful melodies.

Elegantly simplistic guitar strumming begins Seasons version two (the original single released in April as part of her debut album Good Day above), and Mychelle’s beautiful voice familiarly chimes in with a groovy as hell bass line, before we’re presented with the additional element that gives this version its unique stamp.

After Mychelle sings an exceptionally harmonious chorus, reggae figurehead Protoje provides his vocal contribution – a verse perfectly complimenting the melodies of the song and almost mirroring Mychelle’s swaying melodic lines. Her harmonies are even lightly peppered in the background for good measure.

The tranquil elegance, song title, and melancholic vibes makes this especially appropriate for those gloriously long spring into summer evenings, and perhaps even the darkening chill of early Autumn twilights.

Protoje

To my mind the latest big talent to come out of this pocket of North East London, Mychelle’s high notes and poignant songwriting are a welcomed discovery for me. And even though Protoje isn’t bringing his typical reggae style to this version of Seasons, vocally and lyrically these two go together perfectly – whoever decided on this collaboration made the right decision.

Bravo to both of them, and now I can’t help but feel excited for where Mychelle takes her singing and songwriting next. Mychelle and Protoje’s vocals belong together as does blossom to spring time, late sunsets to summer, and fallen leaves to autumn.
