On Rotation SINGLE REVIEW: Old Habits by Fafu feat Superbad Solace & Oddisee

Finally we have some real New York rap gracing the liquid DnB beats, thanks to Fafu’s quality production and Superbad Solace on the mic with Oddisee. Recent single Old Habits is a smooth sneak peak of what Fafu’s forthcoming drum and bass album might have in store – Wu-Tang meets Spectrasoul perhaps?

Those are the artist vibes that come to mind after I’ve pressed play on New York producer Fafu’s recent single Old Habits, featuring golden lyricism from Queens rapper Superbad Solace and Oddisee – with a brilliant music video to go with it (which you can watch down below).

Superbad Solace

Pensive piano chords begin alongside a smooth liquid DnB drum section – then Oddisee’s bars stride into the song effortlessly, complimented by a warm bouncy 808 bass. His verse follows into a chorus filled with xylophones and a full-bodied bass synth to give the chorus that extra oomf.

Superbad Solace’s verse is exquisite, bringing that raw New York lyricism that for so long has been calling to be paired with liquid DnB – who’d of thought they’d be a match made in heaven though.

Oddisee

With bold keys and light beats that fuse so smoothly with the rugged east coast rap, this single feels like a marriage has finally happened that perhaps should have been tried years ago.

It’s a gracious suave single that perfectly embodies Fafu’s stated mission of “Remixing history while building something new.” – being one of the first to bring two underground sounds from opposite sides of the pond together so well, we’ll definitely have the full forthcoming album On Rotation!
